Stannard Homes’ Story
Stannard Homes, a thriving home building company based in Adelaide, Australia, has an inspiring journey. Ryan Stannard, despite being a high school dropout, built a staggering $15 million business. A family-operated establishment, Stannard Homes owes much of its success to the systems-driven approach fostered by Ryan’s daughter, Eryn, who embraced the role of Systems Champion.
The Challenges
When Eryn entered the family business, her initial passion was interior design. However, her role quickly evolved into a more critical position. Within weeks, she was thrust into the deep end, having to take over responsibilities amid staff changes. Eryn faced the daunting task of reorganizing and refining existing systems and procedures, ensuring that they met her high standards and the business’s growing demands.
The main challenge was adapting systems across the entire organization, not just in her initial role. This involved understanding the intricate flow of the home-building process, from marketing to sales, pre-construction and post-construction phases. Eryn’s journey highlighted the need for cohesive systems that could cater for growth, from a small team of seven to a larger team of fifteen staff.
The Solution
Eryn’s systematic approach involved leveraging resources like the Association of Professional Builders to maintain and improve systems and procedures, particularly in human resources. Transitioning into this role, Eryn found the use of tools like Asana, Loom, and ChatGPT invaluable for documentation and streamlined task management.
By booking dedicated times and creating a classroom-like environment, Eryn was able to hold team members accountable and ensure comprehensive system updates. This structured method allowed her to tackle extensive documentation one step at a time, preventing overwhelm and fostering a collaborative atmosphere.
Implementing effective family business growth strategies, Eryn adopted a problem-solving mindset to streamline operations. Her efforts in applying SYSTEMology and documenting every step provided a clear framework for the team, resulting in smoother operations and the ability to handle larger workloads confidently.
Eryn’s role necessitated being a good listener and adaptable to feedback, qualities crucial in a Systems Champion. She emphasized the importance of understanding how various business components interconnect, thus enhancing overall efficiency.
